Traditionally, if you lost a tooth through gum disease, damage or decay, the only options open to you were to leave a gap, or use a bridge or denture.
These days you have another option – dental implants.
Implants are like a post that is screwed or pushed into holes in your jaw bone where your lost tooth used to be. Your gum is then stitched over it to allow your skin and bone to grow around the implant and, over time, to hold it firmly in position.
Once secure, a replacement tooth – like a crown or bridge – is then fixed permanently to the implant or they can be attached – like a denture – for removal and cleaning.
The idea behind dental implants is that they are built to last and designed to look, feel and function your own teeth.
