Issues such as tooth decay and damage, as well as leaky fillings, can sometimes cause the bacteria that live in your mouth to invade a tooth. This can lead to pain and discomfort.
Root canal treatment, also known as endodontics, is a dental procedure we use to treat any infection of your root canal system, which is right at the centre of a tooth.
We start by carefully checking that this treatment is required. An X-ray will show if the pulp has been damaged by a bacterial infection. If it has, and to treat the infection in your root canal, the bacteria has to be carefully removed either through root canal treatment or extracting the tooth. Once the bacteria has been removed, the root canal is cleaned, disinfected and filled, then the tooth is sealed with a filling or crown.
Don't worry, this is all done under local anaesthetic. What's more, around 90% of root canal treatments are successful and can last many years.
